Organisations, networks and people working on HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and Eastern Europe and Central Asia recently came together in reaction to potential changes to the Global Fund’s prioritisation model under discussion at the 21st Board meeting in April 2010. There were strong concerns that changes to the existing model could effectively exclude countries with concentrated epidemics from accessing Global Fund resources. In response, a petition was developed and widely disseminated in Latin America and the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. 1188 signatures were collected in just over 8 days. The Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is considering reviewing its current prioritisation model which determines the order in which proposals are approved in the event of restricted funding. Friends of the Global Fund - Latin America and the Caribbean (Friends-LAC) is concerned that a new prioritisation model would have a negative impact on the LAC region by prioritising generalised epidemics and low income countries. The Global Fund will make a decision about prioritisation at its next board meeting in April. Less funding for our region will hinder our efforts to meet Universal Access targets. We must not allow Latin America and the Caribbean to be left behind. | Download - 286.53kb
